Texarkana consists of two cities in Bowie County, Texas and Miller County, Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the metropolitan area had over 140,000 residents. Texarkana and its Arkansas counterpart comprise a large portion of the Texarkana Metropolitan Statistical Area. When taken together, the two populations exceed 66,000 people.
The History of Texarkana
Texarkana experienced an economic boom in the 1850s as a result of transportation investment from the Cairo and Fulton Railroad. After the Red River Bridge was completed in 1874, trains have run directly between St. Louis and Texarkana. While the origin of the city’s name has never been definitively proven, legend has it that Colonel Gus Knobel etched the name on a plank, nailing it to a tree and proclaiming, “This is the name of a town which is to be built here.”
A Convoluted Past
On the Arkansas side of the metropolitan area, Miller County is the only county in American history to be abolished and later reestablished. Named after the first governor of Arkansas, James Miller, Miller County lost its incorporated status due to politics arising from the Hispanic-Texan divide as a result of the Mexican-American war.
Today Texarkana is a pleasant city whose residents enjoy mild winters and very hot summers. Recently the city received a grant to revitalize the downtown area; both preserving historic integrity and modernize open spaces. Notable residents have or currently include(d) ragtime music composer and artist Scott Joplin; actress Molly Quinn; founding member of the music group The Temptations, Otis Williams; businessman, billionaire, and former presidential candidate Henry Ross Perot; and Pulitzer Prize-winning publisher and CEO of Pearson PLC Dame Marjorie Morris Scardino.
